The Largest Zoos in the World
The 6,000 animals from 650 species at the Bronx Zoo live on a site that is a staggering 253 acres. City zoos are usually significantly smaller, so the Bronx Zoo is the largest metropolitan zoo in the world.
The San Diego Zoo consists of 100 acres of land and is home to 650 different species of animal. Located at Balboa Park, visitors to the zoo will have the pleasure of seeing 3,700 animals at the site. This zoo pioneered open air enclosures for all animals.
London Zoo is relatively small in comparison to other city zoos as the site is only 36 acres. In spite of its size, it is home to 17,000 animals that represent 755 species. Also known as Regent’s Zoo due to its location close to Regent’s Park, this zoo’s claim to fame is that it is the oldest scientific zoo in the world.
The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is quite unusual in that it is divided into two separate sections by the Apies River. One half is on a hilly slope and the other is completely flat. The zoo covers an area of 210 acres with 9,000 individual animals from 700 species.
The Moscow Zoo is smaller than many other zoos covering an area of only 53 acres. However, because of the number of animals living at the zoo it is still considered to be one of the largest in the world. The Moscow zoo houses 8,270 animals from 927 species.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is divided into eight different sections that represent different parts of the world. 793 species and 6,300 animals live on this 580-acre site. The zoo attracts 2.3 million visitors each year.
The Beijing Zoo is spread over 220 acres. 14,500 animals of 1,000 species live at Beijing Zoo. It is well-known for its beautiful setting that includes lakes, ponds and meadows. Visitors enjoy the stunning surroundings as much as the animals.
The Toronto Zoo is the largest zoo in Canada. Covering 710 acres, this zoo is divided into zoogeographical regions. There are over 500 species and 5,000 animals making this zoo one of the largest on the planet.
